TeamChild in Pierce County

TeamChild’s Tacoma office opened its doors in 1998 with support from Pierce County Juvenile Court and state funding.

Local Highlights

  • Thanks to the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation for awarding our Wellness Project a grant in May 2012!
  • TeamChild received an award from the Milgard Family Foundation in April 2012 to support the work of our Pierce County office's Wellness Project (spearheaded by our Soros Justice Fellow).  Thank you Milgard Family Foundation!
  • TeamChild sponsored a local event organized by Senator Regala and Representative Darneille.  A Child's Story: A Community Forum on Children in the Recession took place on November 15, 2011and can be viewed on TVW at: http://www.tvw.org/index.php?option=com_tvwplayer&eventID=2011110073
  • Thanks to everyone who attended our Pierce County Fundraising Event in November 2011 - it was a great success and helped us spread the word about TeamChild's work with youth in Pierce County.  A special thank you to Judge Frank Cuthbertson for his remarks at the event.  In addition, TeamChild would like to thank the following event sponsors: Julie Barnett & John Purbaugh, Luke and Jaime Becker, Josh Dunn of Premier Media, Innovative Fitness, Law Office of Arlene Joe, Alaina Kitz, Mike & Teri Nist, Senator Debbie Regala, Karen Smitherman, Eden Toner and Woodrock Inc.
  • TeamChild is thrilled to announce that former law clerk and volunteer, Sara Zier, has received a prestigious Soros Justice Fellowship from the Open Society Foundations. She just joined the Pierce County office in September and will focus on improving mental health services for juvenile justice involved youth. For more information, read the OSF press release.
  • TeamChild Pierce County partnered with Tacoma-Pierce County Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) in 2010 to develop a new panel of volunteer lawyers. The Lawyers Helping Youth Access School Panel allows volunteer lawyers to help youth who have been suspended or expelled get back into school. The VLS provides administrative support to the volunteer attorneys. TeamChild recruits and trains attorneys for the panel and provides ongoing technical assistance to these volunteers. Volunteers are asked to take one case per school year to assist a youth who has been suspended or expelled to return to school. Volunteers can earn an additional 4 CLE credits for their pro bono service. We will be holding another introductory training at the start of next school year. Contact Paul Alig or Heather Carawan if you are an attorney interested in volunteering on this project.
  • Gaps in educational services for incarcerated youth can have a tremendous impact on a youth’s ability to stay on a path towards graduation and future employment. Columbia Legal Services worked with TeamChild to ensure that youth incarcerated in the Pierce County adult jail are receiving educational services.
