Advocacy Training

TeamChild in Snohomish County

TeamChild’s Everett office opened its doors to Snohomish County youth in 2001 with support from federal Byrne grant funding administered by the Washington’s Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee (GJJAC).

Local Highlights

  • TeamChild received a grant from the Tulalip Tribes Charitable Fund in 2011 to support the work of our Snohomish County office. Thank you Tulalip Tribes!
  • TeamChild partnered with the Washington Defender Association (WDA) in September 2010 on a training for Snohomish County attorneys defending youth in decline proceedings. Our Snohomish County staff attorney trained the group on methods for obtaining critical information from the education, juvenile and dependency systems.
  • In response to local partners who requested information about youth rights to mental health services, TeamChild developed a training module on mental health advocacy for youth in the juvenile justice system. Our training module was piloted with Snohomish County juvenile probation counselors, CASAs and public defenders in May 2010. The goal of the training is to build capacity within the community to identify access issues for youth who are entitled to mental health services but have been denied or terminated from a treatment program.
  • Our Snohomish County office has been working with volunteer law school students to research issues that impact our clients and develop resources for our partners. In 2011, a graduate from the University of California Davis School of Law developed a checklist to help attorneys support juvenile offenders who are leaving the juvenile justice system in their efforts to secure employment, housing and schooling. A Seattle University School of Law student also wrote a legal memorandum for juvenile public defenders advocating for community-based services rather than long-term incarceration.
  • Read a 2009 Mukilteo Beacon editorial by local councilman Mike Cooper featuring TeamChild Snohomish County.
