I have enjoyed being the first point of contact in the Pierce County TeamChild office and really listening to our clients’ stories. In this job I have learned so much about the resiliency and resourcefulness of the young people we serve, but also about the systemic challenges they face. From an early age, I knew I wanted to work with a team committed to improving those systems and trying to bring about change. I grew up next door to the historic Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee, which has been training leaders and organizers of social movements since the 1930s. I have worked in non-profit, arts and education organizations, always with an eye toward providing equal access to opportunities. My graduate work in Cinema at San Francisco State University has also allowed me to teach a Documentary Studies course at Pierce College and to produce two videos for our organization, translating client stories into a visual medium. I look forward to supporting TeamChild’s Communications efforts going forward.
